Racing Events - 2009

The TCC Racing FleetEach year the Tollesbury Cruising Club organises a complete programme of race events, you can find details on the Programme page of this web site.

The Rear Commodore - David Knight organises all the club races. His contact details, for all enquiries about racing, are to be found on the Committee page.

The ethos behind our club racing is primarily to have fun, but by competing against other members, it can develop your sailing skill, and awareness, thus making us better sailors.

Teddy Bear Race & Howlett Trophy

Alex Perrin sailing Grey GooseLiz and Alex Perrin with their cousin Malachi ShepstoneDue to lack of numbers we cancelled the Teddy Bear (only two boats) and the Howlett Trophy Race was also cancelled, as only one entry. Lucky really in some respects as the wind did not drop as much as forecast and we still had a healthy F6 which would have called of the Teddy Bear Race anyway.

However Rob and Charlotte Perrin onboard Grey Goose, even though they missed the tide on Saturday, went out on the Sunday afternoon tide with their boat decorated with Teddy Bears, and sailed in the "spirit" of the event.

Their children  (Liz and Alex Perrin with their cousin Malachi Shepstone) have been awarded the medals, for this effort!!!

Racing Programme

The Racing programme consists of 10 races, and are open to all comers, both new and old hands There is a passage race which will hopefully end up in Ramsgate, subject to conditions. We also hope to run one Race as a Pursuit, where each competitor is given an individual start time according to their handicap. Then hopefully all the boats will all close the finish line in quick succession.

New for 2009 we are introducing Platinum and Gold level races for some events. The Platinum fleet will be for members who are more competitive and enjoy longer more challenging courses. The Gold Fleet will be for members who wish to sail in a less competitive race, using "white sails" only. This could be a great way to experience the fun in racing, whilst hopefully not feeling pressurised, as some skippers do when in a race. Alternatively with any race, you are always welcome to join as a Cruising member, and get involved with any event or festivities that are organised after the event. Again this year we will be organising the Teapot Trophy for female crews, and the Boudica Trophy for all female crewed boats, yes chaps you'll have to give up your tight grip on the helm for the day!

Last year we tried to run a Teddy Bear Race for our younger members to show off their helming abilities, although not well supported it proved we have a workable formula, and is great to get the whole family involved.

Three of the races are inter Club events , The Wallet Long Race where we compete against the Tollesbury Sailing Club, the Kings Head Cup where TSC challenges us to sail "round the island". The Wallet Shield Race is organised by the member clubs of the Wallet Association, and this year its TSC turn to organise the Wallet Ball and the Race, where the first three boats from any competing club, are awarded the trophy.

Please Note Dates and times for the races as shown in the programme may vary, so please keep an eye on the Clubs Notice Board, and the forum on this web site for any changes.
