Goldie Challenge and Burnham Weekend - May 14th/15th
Robin Kemp (standing in for Ian Robinson who was on
holiday) did a great job planning the race, which turned out to be
excellent, and it was great to see such a large fleet taking part.
Everyone had a fantastic time. Chris and Joyce provided the
committee boat again, all very professionally executed as one would
expect from such an experienced crew.
David Cooke organised the dinner in the Swallowtail restaurant at
the Burnham Marina, with a fantastic turnout, a superb meal, with
some members even coming by car to support. The Swallowtail did us
proud, especially as they also had to cater for the Bradwell CC on
the same evening.

Pursuit Race 23rd April
12 boats took part in the Pursuit Race to the Orwell at the start
of the Easter Cruise. 11 boats raced and Joyce and Chris kindly took
Calidris up to the Harwich Breakwater to perform the duty of
Committee Boat at the finish.
The conditions were testing. Firstly, everyone had to be up very
early after a very enjoyable pontoon party at Brightlingsea.
Secondly, the wind was a light to non-existent north-easterly.
Andy Abraham’s Essex Smack Electron was first off at 0430. 20
minutes later Sardinade departed the Brightlingsea Spit cardinal.
Then over the next 70 minutes Edge Beyond, Diana II, Aerial Spirit,
Speedwell, Mimosa, Polo IV, Hoppetosse, Ostara and Moonshine
successively followed.
The earlier boats had some benefit from the last of the night’s land
breeze. As sun rose it killed the breeze in the Colne and then in
the Wallet. Clearing the Colne Bar buoy to port against the building
ebb tide became an impossible objective for most of the boats.
Hoppetosse anchored on the Bar to have breakfast whilst they waited
to see if any wind would return. It didn’t. By 0930 there were only
3 boats left in the race. Sardinade was off the Naze and some 7
miles in front of Speedwell and Polo IV and had any wind arisen they
would still have been uncatchable. It was also clear that unless the
race was cancelled the 3 boats would be faced with abandoning or
being time expired.
Moonshine drifting into a new day on the Colne
We have a new name to add to the trophy – that of Sardinade. Congratulations to Nick and Tricia for making the best of the conditions. Polo IV judged they had not made any time on Speedwell so second place goes to Speedwell. Polo IV takes third place. Ian Robinson (Ostara)
